The American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine (ABEM) is an independent credentialing body in electrodiagnostic (EDX) medicine. The American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM) initiated the first examination setting EDX standards in 1967; it was formalized under ABEM in 1987. The ABEM examination is the only U.S. exam certifying physicians in EDX medicine, with more than 3500 physicians currently certified. In 2011, ABEM will launch its first certification exam for electroneurodiagnostic technologists performing nerve conduction studies.
ABEM 's goal is to promote high quality patient care. It does so by overseeing a certification process that requires physicians to obtain specific academic training and clinical experience, then demonstrate competency in the EDX evaluation of neuromuscular and musculoskeletal system by passing a comprehensive written and oral examination. The ABEM also encourages a commitment to lifelong learning by providing a maintenance of certification program based on continuing education and periodic re-examination. The ABEM is excited to show its on-going commitment to patient care by developing standards for technologist certification and lifelong learning in the coming year. |
