| Frequently
Asked Questions
|
|
| Do I need to possess certification in my primary
specialty in order to sit for the ABEM examination? |
| A candidate must be a Diplomate of the American
Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, American Board of Physical Medicine and
Rehabilitation, American Osteopathic Board of Neurology and Psychiatry,
American Osteopathic Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, or Canadian
equivalent in order to sit for the ABEM examination. Overseas physicians
may be eligible for the Certificate
of Recognition. |
| How
much training must have been done in order to qualify for the examination?
|
| The
training must be at least 6 months full-time or equivalent, with the first
3 months rigidly structured with regard to supervision. During these 6
months, at least 200 complete electrodiagnostic evaluations must be performed
on separate occasions; these studies must be documented and interpreted.
|
| In
addition to the 6 months of training, is there any other criterion that
must be met? |
| Candidates
must also document at least 1 year of independent experience following
training during which they must perform 200 additional complete electrodiagnostic
evaluations on separate occasions. This period of independent experience
can only begin after satisfactory completion of an approved neurology
or physical medicine and rehabilitation residency training program and
the 6-month training. |
| What if
I am in a Fellowship Program? Can part of that time count as my 1 year
of independent experience? |
| The
year of independent experience may be part of a postresidency program
(e.g., fellowship) which includes electrodiagnostic medicine. The time
spent in such a postresidency program beyond the minimum 6 months training
can count toward the 1 year of independent experience. Your training program
director must verify that you were independently performing and interpreting
the electrodiagnostic studies for the last 6 months of your fellowship
to count
toward the 1 year.
|
| Once I pass
the examination how long is the certification valid? |
|
The ABEM Certificate is
time-limited and is valid for a period of 10 years.
|
Can
I obtain continuing medical education for taking the examination? |
No,
the American Medical Association Physician Recognition Award criteria
does not allow Category 1 credit for certification examinations. |
What
is the cost of the examination? |
The
application fee for the examination is $100 if the application is received
before the early bird deadline, $200 if received between December 1 and
December 31. The examination fee is $850. |
| What if I want to withdraw from the
examination? |
|
The examination
fee is refundable until December 31 with written notification.
The application fee is non-refundable. If a candidate withdraws
after December 31 or does not appear for the examination, all fees will
be forfeited. Examination fees will be refunded to those not eligible
and those without the necessary documentation and references. |
