Application Fee

Early October through November 30               $100

    December 1 through December 31, 2009        $200

This fee is nonrefundable.  Absolutely no applications will be accepted after January 1, 2010.

For repeat applications, the application fee is waived within 3 years of the original application and discounted to $50 thereafter. The application fee is also $50 if an AANEM provisional membership was paid in the past year.

Examination Fee            $850

Examination fees will be refunded to those not eligible and those without the necessary documentation and references.

The examination fee will be refunded until December 31 with written notification. If a candidate withdraws after December 31 or does not appear for the examination, all fees will be forfeited.

Application Requirements

To be accepted, the application form, application fee, and examination fee must be received by the application deadline date (November 30, for the early bird rate, or December 31, with payment of the regular examination fee). The completed application should include:

  • A copy of the applicant’s physician registration documenting that his or her license to practice medicine is current.
  • A curriculum vitae detailing training, hospital staff appointments, teaching positions, time in the practice of electrodiagnostic medicine, and medical papers published.
  • Documentation of primary board certification (copy of American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) board certificate, American Osteopathic Association board certificate or Canadian equivalent).
  • Any other information the candidate deems relevant to the determination of admissibility to the examination.

Following receipt of the application, reference forms are sent by the ABEM Executive Office to the candidate’s supervising training director(s). If this physician is not an ABEM Board Diplomate, a reference form is also sent to a Board Diplomate familiar with the candidate’s training program and current activities in electrodiagnostic medicine. The applicant may opt to submit the names of additional physician references in support of his or her application, and forms will be sent to those individuals. No decision regarding admissibility to the examination will be made until the physicians, from whom references are requested, have replied.

It will be at least 10 weeks before a candidate receives information regarding his or her application. Applications received near the deadline may take longer because of the volume received at that time.

Note: The ABEM does not discriminate among applicants on the basis of age, gender, race, religion, national origin, disability, or marital status.

It is the responsibility of the candidate to notify the Executive Office in writing of any change in address or telephone number.

Candidates with Disabilities

Candidates that pass the examination to maintain their certificate must participate in the Maintenance of Certification Program.
