Generally speaking AMA PRA category 1 CreditTM activities are designated
for credit by an Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education
(ACCME)–accredited provider. Those accredited providers will
provide documentation of CME credits earned, and must include on such
documentation the following statement:
The [name of accredited provider] designates this educational activity for a maximum of [number of credit]AMA PRA category 1 CreditTM. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
Educational activities that provide documentation
of CME credit earned containing this statement are to be listed on
the category 1 CME section of the ABEM CME Declaration and Recording
Form, provided such activities are in areas pertaining to electrodiagnostic
medicine and/or clinical and basic aspects of neuromuscular diseases.
The following types of educational activities may be accredited:
 |
Attendance-based activities
CME activities that require the physician to be in attendance to
receive credit include workshops, seminars, grand rounds, and
departmental scientific meetings. |
 |
Journal-based CME
Journal activities may be designated for AMA PRA category 1 credit
provided the activity meets the criteria for formal CME activities,
the material appears in a peer-reviewed journal, and the accredited
provider develops an overall educational plan that will be covered
over a defined period of time, including an appropriate evaluation
at the end of the period. |
 |
Enduring materials
Enduring materials are printed, recorded, audio, video or electronic
activities, including internet, computer-assisted instruction, and
broadcast activities. To be designated for AMA PRA category 1 CreditTM,
enduring materials must comply with the standards for category 1 activities,
provide clearly stated instructions, and establish a predetermined
amount of time, include some type of student interaction, and have
a means of verifying physician participation. Physicians who serve
as instructors may claim credits for an AMA PRA category 1 CreditTM teaching
activity.

International conferences approved
by the AMA
To facilitate participation of US physicians in major international
CME conferences that cannot be sponsored or jointly sponsored by
an organization accredited by the ACCME, the AMA has developed
protocols for reviewing and approving specific international events
for AMA PRA category 1 CreditTM. Participation must be verified on
site by an official AMA representative. The AMA issues credit certificates
and maintains attendance records. |
AMA PRA category 1 CreditTM can be obtained directly from the AMA for
activities that cannot be designated by an accredited provider, such
as writing journal articles, teaching in a CME event, and ABMS specialty
board recertification, and other activities. See the AMA website at
www.ama-assn.org/go/pra for more information. |
