FAQs

Where do I take the exam?

The exam will be held in all Pearson Vue Testing Centers world-wide.
 

What is the format of the exam?

The exam is a multiple choice written exam. There are approximately 200 questions, including both waveform and static image items. There is a 4 hour time limit to complete the exam.

How much does the exam cost?

The early application examination fee is $950. The examination fee increases to $1050 after the early application deadline. For information about cancellations and refunds, please reference the Withdrawing from the Exam page.
 

What do I do after I complete the online registration through ABEM?

After completing online registration, you'll receive an automated "registration receipt" e-mail. Staff will contact you to ensure all requirements are fulfilled. (Please allow 4-6 weeks for processing.) Once you are deemed eligible for the exam, you'll receive an “Authorization to Test” e-mail directing you to contact Pearson Vue (by phone or e-mail) to schedule the day and location of  your ABEM Certification Exam.
 

Once I pass the examination how long is the certification valid?

The ABEM Certificate is valid for a period of 10 years.

Can I obtain continuing medical education credits for taking the examination?

No, the American Medical Association Physician Recognition Award criteria does not allow Category 1 credit for certification examinations.
